An "ice age" or, more precisely, "glacial age" is a period of long-term reduction in the temperature of the Earth's surface and atmosphere. There have been multiple glacial ages and is natural for the Earth to go through geological cycles. I'm not sure we know a more precise reason for these cycles yet?

Possible Answer

Saw a program about this.

The current theory that is going around is that the water currents had a strong connection with the ice age. The various water currents that bring warm water to northern waters drops in temperature (usually do to excess fresh water in the oceans) causing the water to be unable to keep the northern waters warm. And since the oceans are a global weather control, it is important that the warm currents stay, well, warm, to keep a fair amount of ice melted. Though it can't get too warm (global warming) otherwise too much ice melts, causing an excess supply of fresh water to mix in the salt water, causing the water temperatures to stay cold and then affect the weather, which then causes global white cold spells and then eventually the ice age....

At least that is the theory I've heard

I thought it was because the earth's orbit is not quite perfect. it wobbles further out from the sun (or is pulled) and iceages happen
