First comment! The chinese zodiac's origins have never been known, but I have some other information. It was originally a system of forture-telling with nothing to do with animals. It was a numerical system based on tens and twelves. Later, animals were added in coordination with certain years. Also, the legend of the cat dictates that there were originally 13 zodiac animals, but the cat got tricked out of it, by the rat.

Dang, I read too much Fruits Basket.

But now there are 13 once more, Ophiuchus replacing the cat, which, if MegaMan Star Force has taught me anything, is related to snakes.

Aha! Whoops!! Not the same thing. My bad! (Thanks Yamataro)
Leaving this up for the lulz. :)

God invited all the animals to a party but then the rat told the cat the wrong day so there is no year of the cat. And all the animals at the party got a year XD

The chinese zodiac =/= the zodiac of stars (the astronomical zodiac) =/= the astrological zodiac (which is used in horoscopes and such)

The three zodiacs are all based around the constellations that, at some point in the year, are on the opposite side of the sun from us. There are thirteen of these, one only recently found. The chinese zodiac took note of these constellations, but did not have meaning for them, merely used an animal for each. It eventually evolved into the way it is now, with the year of each animal (also I believe the chinese zodiac had some position in religion, but I'm not sure about that). The astrological zodiac is based off of the same constellations, but used the names and symbols from the astronomical zodiac. Each zodiac symbol represents one twelfth of the year, and, while the dates were originally connected to the constellations, but due to the planet's year being not exactly what they had though it was, the dates shifted from the times the actual constellations were behind the sun. The astronomical zodiac is merely the thirteen constellations that pass behind the sun. It is the only one ophiuchus (the serpent bearer) is in, as the others are no longer based on this one.
