If you have another charity to suggest, please do so in the comments section. If it is a lesser known charity, I recommend checking their BBB rating as well.

Global Giving

This is a pretty good source. They work with a lot of other charities as well.

Question Duck is there because he CARES.

I'm sorry, I really would try to help, but I can't afford that at all... I barely have enough to make my housing payment for next month.

I'm going to point out that Japan wasn't the only country wrecked by this stuff- Indonesia just got hit with a volcano eruption, if I'm not mistaken.

So yeah, heart goes out to Japan and all... But they aren't in need of near as much help as some other countries.

I would like to point out that if you buy a sjeeves subscription, the money goes to one of these charities. For march only.

@Kishaz
It's one reason I don't name Japan specifically, but I will admit the weight of the event in Japan and its predominance in the news brought this message about.

Unless you have the specific set of skills to deal with an awful situation and little to no infrastructure, by staying away, donating money and letting the professionals do their job.

There can be a temptation to try to make it to a place like this, to see if you can help. Unless you know you can help, you risk becoming another mouth to feed in a desperate situation
