This is a cool comic. I ponder many questions often.

I think the US still produces its own steel. Or it used to. I like how this comic makes me think about things I wouldn't normally be thinking about.

I think they mine iron, and then form it with other mined metals to form the alloy "Steel."

the us made it's own steel until japan sold it for less than it was worth in order to run the us out of business, then raised the prices again when they were the only ones selling

... i live in what used to be a major steel town, i learn these things...

SBDRAG - nice bit of political blatherskype there.
Japan steel started off recycling what US steelmakers didn't want to touch - things like old battle ships and tanks and such - it was too much of a bother for them to do it.
The US companies bought or built new plants in locations either closer to the the minerals or where labor and materials were cheaper or just bought out companies in other countries. Most of the big multinationals are US companies, they just don't do much if any work in the states since labor is cheaper in countries with dictatorships and no labor laws.
Companies in first world nations instead invested in technology and training going for quality and sustainability of production over short term profit margins.

To answer the ducks question - South Korea, Japan, Germany, China, India, Turkey, Netherlands and then all the rest (%60). China was #1 in 2009 though.
